Essential Independence Day goodies

Happy Independence Day to all those who celebrate. The Fourth of July sees American nationals all over the world look back to that day in 1776, and the establishment of the United States of America. If you are planning your annual gathering, and want a little recipe assistance, we have all you need.

July 4 is traditionally a barbecue moment, or some form of outdoor party. So think burgers, hot dogs and ribs, corn on the cob and coleslaw, and some comforting sweet things too.

Explore our Fourth of July Menu inspiration for all these and more.

Find Hot Dogs, a Miss Baltimore Crab Cake Sandwich, and this Warm Potato Salad with Pickled Red Onion.

Don’t forget the Cheesecake with Blueberry Sauce, and while you’re cooking on fire leave room for some S’Mores.

Rogelio Garcia’s award-winning Convivir is our cookbook of the month for July

‘Whether you are planning a dinner for a special occasion with friends and family—in which case one of my featured menus might be just the thing—or want to incorporate new techniques and recipes in your cooking, I hope you will come to share my passion for modern Mexican cuisine and fresh, local ingredients.’ Rogelio Garcia

Congratulations to Michelin-starred chef Rogelio Garcia whose recently published book Convivir: Modern Mexican Cuisine in California’s Wine Country has just won the James Beard Book Award, in the Restaurant and Professional category. We are delighted to have the book newly added to ckbk, and to name it our cookbook of the month for July!

Top Chef alumni Rogelio is currently executive chef at Auro—named one of the best new restaurants in America by Esquire Magazine. In Convivir he brings us the ethos of his cuisine—convivir literally means “to live together”—whether that be the happy marriage of ingredients in a dish, or meeting others over good food and wine. Recipes showcase traditional Mexican flavors, adapted for a modern lifestyle and brought within reach of the home cook.

Recipes are organised according to primary source—Milpa (the field), Mar (the sea), Rancho (the livestock farm), as well as Masa (wheat or corn dough).

Find classics such as Guacamole de Reina, and Brentwood Corn Champurrado, and fresh contemporary dishes like this Grilled Stone Fruit Salad with Mezcal Vinaigrette.

We love Convivir so much we are making it our #ckbkclub Cookbook of The Month for July, the perfect opportunity to get stuck in and whip up a California-style, Mexican dish or two. If you haven’t taken part before, all you have to do is join the #ckbkclub group on Facebook, and post your photos and comments. We can’t wait to see what you make!

Salad days

As the temperature rises, cooking seems a lot less appealing, and what you really want to eat is something light and fresh. Cue a salad.

The great Peter Gordon knows his way around a salad plate, and his book Salads: The New Main Course, is a must-read at this time of year.

Also explore our collections of Easy Summer Salads, and Picnic Salads for Summer, for plenty of cool recipes for hot days.

Ingredient focus: blueberries

Native to North America, the blueberry is a small deep-blue fruit found on a bushy plant. The plump round berry is rich in antioxidants, has anti-inflammatory qualities, and is widely eaten for its health giving properties as well as its sweet, mild tangy flavor.

A component of many classic American sweet bakes, such as Blueberry Muffins and Blueberry Cobbler, it works in a great variety of dishes, and also makes great jam. Find a recipe for an easy Frozen Uncooked Blueberry Jam, and eleven other great recipes with blueberries in our collection of 12 Ways with Blueberries.
